I hired a landscape gardner to do some work at my house.
His first day on site had been tough.
A flat tire first thing had made him late. His chainsaw broke down and his van refused to start at the end of a long day. It was enough to make anyone grumpy!
He accepted the offer of a lift from me. On the way home he sat in the front seat and brooded in silence.
Once we got to his driveway he invited me in for a drink to say ‘thank you’ and to meet his family.
As we walked toward the front door he paused for a moment at a small tree on his front lawn and touched the tips of the branches with both hands.
The door opened and I could not believe the transformation that then occurred. His face broke into a big smile as he hugged his children and greeted his wife lovingly.
Afterwards, he escorted me to my car. As we walked past the tree my curiosity go the better of me and I asked about what I had seen him do earlier.
“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he said. “I know that I’m going to have troubles each day doing my work. The thing is nearly all of those troubles don’t belong in the home with my wife and children. So what I do is to hang them on the tree when I come home from work each day. Then I pick them up in the morning as I set of for work. You know something funny often happens,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick them up there’s not nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”
