I bumped into a business acquaintance recently. I greeted him warmly and asked how he was. BIG mistake!

He spent the next few minutes telling me about his woes – he said his business was struggling because suppliers had let him down, clients were being difficult, his outsourced telemarketing campaign was failing to generate leads, employees were surly and unproductive, finances were strained and he was working so hard that he had little or no time for his family and friends. Oh, dear…

I came away from the brief encounter feeling exhausted!

And it reminded me of a story…

A son and his father were walking in the mountains.

Suddenly, the boy falls and hurts himself. He screams with pain: “Arrrrgh!!!”

To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain: “Arrrrgh!!!”

Curious, he yells: “Who are you?”

He receives the answer: “Who are you?”

Now angered at the response, he screams: “Coward!”

He receives the answer: “Coward!”

So the boy looks at his father and asks: “What’s going on?”

The father smiles and says: “My son, pay attention to what I am about to do.”

And then he screams to the mountain: “I admire you!”

The voice answers: “I admire you!”

Again the man screams: “You are a champion!”

The voice answers: “You are a champion!”

The boy is surprised but does not understand.

Then the father explains: “People call this ECHO, but really this is LIFE. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our decisions, actions, and behaviours. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence. This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life. Life will give you back everything you have given to it. Your life is not a coincidence. It is a reflection of you!

So what’s your life like? What are you reflecting?

Here’s the thing –  if you want a change in your life, you have to start that change yourself.

Too many people make excuses and are in denial. They blame fate, coincidence, and “it is out of my hands” as the narrative to explain why they are victims in life. They find it hard to be accountable and take responsibility for themselves and their decisions, actions, and behaviours.

If you are not satisfied with where you are in life and what you have, then it is time to do something about it.

Do something different, learn something new, meet new people, think differently.

Can you do this? I think you can. Do you?
